Clean homes make it easier for you to relax. Not only can they help provide the perfect space to recharge, but clean homes are healthier for you and your family. For homeowners with pets in the family, having clean floors can seem like a challenge- pet hair and dirt tracked in from outside add an extra level of cleaning to maintain beautiful floors. All it takes is a little extra preparation and care to show your floors and pets the love they deserve.

Pets need to have clean, safe floors because they can spend a lot of time at ground level. Whether it’s just lying on the floor, eating on the floor, or exploring/sniffing the floor, our pets have a totally different experience with floors than we do. Here are some simple floor cleaning tips for pet owners to keep everyone healthy and safe.

1. Use a pet-safe floor cleaner

Cleaning dirt and grime from floors can be done safely and effectively. Choose a safe cleaner with quality ingredients, free of harmful chemicals to reduce the risk of inhalation or ingestion by your pets. Bona cleaners are biodegradable, water-based solutions that are phthalate and paraben-free and meet U.S. EPA product standards to be Safer Choice certified to contain ingredients that are safer for people, pets, and the planet.

2. Keep pets properly cared for

Fur is a big concern for pet owners, and frequent brushing of your pets will keep them cleaner and happier and prevent a lot of fur from getting on your floors. To prevent/minimize scratches on floors and damage to your finish, be sure to keep pets’ nails clean and trimmed.

3. Prevent damage to pet areas

Protect areas with heavy pet traffic for easy cleaning and maintenance. Use pads or mats around feeding areas and make sure food and water bowls are stable to minimize spills or crumbs. Pay special attention when breaking up the pet house and attend to pet damage as soon as possible to avoid damage to the floor or lingering odors.

4. Dusting

When you have a pet, dust tends to populate every corner. And if you have the misfortune to move a blanket or a cushion, a cloud of dust and dust mites arrive and trigger a series of sneezes… To get rid of the dust more permanently, I got into the habit of starting the housework by shaking and tapping all the cushions, comforters, and plaids of all kinds through the window.

The amount of dust, hair, and dust mites that get trapped there is quite impressive. If some people around you are allergic or sensitive, do not hesitate to use an anti-mite product on your textiles. Once everything is well shaken, you can start dusting and vacuuming. Don’t hesitate to leave your comforters on the windowsill during your cleaning. This will give them a nice fresh look.

5. Vacuuming

That says it all: we’ll make your vacuum cleaner more powerful and more pleasant to use. To keep the suction power satisfactory, empty your vacuum cleaner more often. Of course, if you have a bagged vacuum cleaner, this is not the most economical solution, but you will save time and suck up more dust. You don’t have to empty the tank as often as a bagless vacuum!

And to make your vacuum cleaner pleasant to use, put a few drops of essential oil on the bag or the filter of your appliance. This way, each time you use it, you deodorize the room at the same time! You can vary the pleasures by diffusing a different scent per room if you wish. Buy a stock of filters compatible with your vacuum cleaner and reserve each filter for a different essential oil to avoid mixing. This way, you can change the scent and alternate.

6. Take care of your washing machine

It is often forgotten, but cleaning the filter of your washing machine is important and can extend the life of the appliance. In normal circumstances, it is recommended to clean the filter of your washing machine 5 to 6 times a year. But when you have a pet, you have to admit that the washing machine is put to the test and ingests many hairs.

I would advise you to clean the filter more frequently, once a month. Remember to unplug your machine when you do this! Before doing any laundry, remember to remove the majority of pet hair to avoid damaging your machine. Here are a few tips from grandma on how to remove pet hair.
