Getting Rid of Spiders at Home: 11 Tips

It stares at you from the bathtub, then it starts to move. It tries desperately to climb up with its hairy legs. But the spider keeps slithering downward; if you have spiders in your home, they are probably a small percentage of all the spiders living in your home. Most of the 1,500 spiders, on average, live in places that are out of reach of your vacuum cleaner, even during spring cleaning. There is no such thing as a spider-free home. Even newly built homes have places for spiders to lounge.

But how do you get that beast out of the house? Here are some tips to help you out!

Tip 1: Clean (Remove Webs)

Go around the house regularly with a dustpan and go through every nook and cranny. Spiders like quiet places. For example, in cupboards, attics, basements, garages, and corners of living rooms. The more you clean these places, the less likely you will see them.

Tip 2: Use a Vacuum Cleaner To Get Rid of Spiders

If you want to get rid of unwanted inhabitants quickly, vacuuming is an excellent way to do so. Most spiders will suffocate in the dust in the vacuum cleaner bag. Gigantic spiders may take longer to die. If you are truly phobic and just don’t like the sight of spiders, you can vacuum them up or crush them with something hard. Sure; we find this to be a gruesome death as well!

Tip 3: Use Tools

Don’t dare approach a spider? For the scaredy-cat, there are special tools sold to catch spiders.

Tip 4: Get Rid of Any Holes in the House

Spiders often hide in the crevices and ditches of buildings. For this reason, you should fill any cavities or holes in your house. Without a place to hide, spiders will give up quickly.

Tip 5: Use Peppermint or Eucalyptus

Spiders do not like the smell of peppermint or eucalyptus. For example, mix peppermint oil with water and spray it on the openings and baseboards of your house. Do you have a green thumb? Then placing mint seedlings on windowsills and other surfaces can also help.

Tip 6: The Power of Vinegar

The fragrance is a bit strong, so it may not be to everyone’s taste. However, if vinegar is diluted with water, it can also keep spiders away. Proceed in the same way as spraying peppermint oil.

Tip 7: Citrus Fruits

Lemons, oranges, and other citrus fruits: spiders absolutely hate them. This is, therefore the perfect time to prepare smoothies or fruit salads, for example. Use the peel on the outside of windows and doors. The scent lasts about 24 hours and keeps less-liked animals, including spiders away.

Tip 8: Get a Cat

Cats love tasty spiders and are a rather effective solution. Easy enough to solve, right? If you don’t dare approach them, send a cat. They will most likely see the spider as tasty prey and put you out of danger.

Tip 9: Use a Cup and a Piece of Paper

With a cup and a piece of paper, you can easily catch the spiders and keep them out. However, remember that house spiders will do anything to get back inside, because they cannot survive outside.

Tip 10: Beware of Breadcrumbs

Crumbs attract insects, and what do spiders like? Yes, insects. Clean up crumbs and small dirt properly, and don’t leave leftovers. Dust webs may also contain eggs, so remove them on time.

Tip 11: Don’t Switch On Lights Outdoors

Turn off outside lights. Mosquitoes and other insects like light, and where there are insects, there are spiders.
