Baking Soda: The Ultimate Secret to Clean White Converse

Whether you’re working out, at the office or at a music festival with friends… Converse trainers are a fashion icon, especially the white ones, which are huge on sale and go with almost any look. Do they get dirty? They get dirty just by looking at them!

In fact, it’s very common for that pristine white from day one to turn an unsightly yellow over the years. That’s why in our cleaning section, we’re giving you the viral internet tip on how to get your dirty white and yellow Converse back. They’ll look as good as new!

Baking Soda Tip for Cleaning White Converse

To use this tip, you will need to have some washing powder and a bottle of baking soda. As you know, baking soda is an effective, cheap and easy-to-use cleaning product.

To clean your white converse, follow these steps:

Remove the Laces From the Converse and Open the Tongue Wide
First remove the laces from the shoes and wash them separately. Then open the tongue wide to clean the inside of the shoe.

Wet the White Converse With a Little Water
Pour some warm water into a basin and use a cloth to soak the shoe completely. It is not necessary to put them in a bucket of water.

Apply a Paste of Baking Soda and Detergent to the Shoe
The trick to making white Converse look like new is as follows: Pour equal parts of baking soda and detergent into a fresh container (for example, 250 grams of baking soda + 250 grams of liquid or powdered detergent). The aim is to make a whitening paste with the baking soda and detergent.
Then, using a toothbrush, soak the entire shoe in the baking soda paste. If you see that the inside is very dirty, apply the same mixture until the whole surface is covered.
Remember that we are using a bleaching agent, baking soda, so it is not recommended to use it on other shoes such as trainers (which are usually coloured).
You can also use a clothes brush to apply the mixture to the shoe.

Leave the Baking Soda to Sit For 2 to 3 Hours.
After the third step, leave the baking soda and detergent mixture on the shoe for two to three hours. The paste we have created is specially designed to whiten and remove the most stubborn dirt from any brand of shoe.

When the time is up, use soapy water to finish the clean. Remember to rinse with cold water and remove all detergent from the shoe. It is also important to clean the sole of the shoe and it is best to use the brush to remove any remaining dirt.

Air Drying the Shoe
Drying Converse shoes is very important, so it is advisable to follow the manufacturer’s instructions: always dry them outside (to avoid moisture) and preferably in the shade. Another option is to hang them by their tabs using tweezers.
To prevent them from deforming, fill the inside with paper and change it as often as necessary.

Other Ways to Clean Converse

There are other ways to get your white Converse shoes back to their original colour. We have listed them below:

Using baking soda and vinegar. The method would be similar to the previous one; mix equal parts baking soda and vinegar in a bowl and soak the converse in the solution. Leave to soak for an hour before scrubbing and washing.

With baking soda and lemon. A similar trick is to mix baking soda and natural lemon juice to get rid of yellow stains. First rub the shoe with lemon, then sprinkle with baking soda and leave for 1 hour before brushing, rinsing and drying.

With toothpaste. Have your white Converse turned yellow? Try this tip: wet the shoe and apply toothpaste to the yellow stains on the shoe. Then use a brush to scrub the stain thoroughly until it disappears. Finally, wash the shoe with a detergent, rinse and air dry.
