The days are getting longer, the temperatures are getting milder, and the snow is melting. No doubt about it, spring is just around the corner, and with it, a desire to put everything in order. Just before the hot weather, the months of April and May are the ideal time to do this big cleaning.
It’s time to sort out our closets and wash our condo from top to bottom. If the idea of starting this big cleanup appeals to you, but you don’t know where to begin. So, without further ado, let’s dive into this blog and learn some of our best tips and advice to clean your condo.
Before you start
Make a list of everything you have to do. This will allow you to better organize your time, and you will be satisfied to check off items as your cleaning progresses. You can also do the cleaning room by room. Instead of trying to do it all in one day, divide your spring cleaning over a few weekends, tackling one or two rooms at a time.
Make sure you have all the necessary cleaning supplies before you start: soaps, vinegar, cloths, paper towels, pails, brooms, garbage bags, gloves, etc. We open the windows during and after the cleaning to air the space! After living cooped up during winter, let the fresh air into your condo. To make everything go more smoothly, we get the family involved. The cleaning will be done more quickly, and it will be much more pleasant.
1. The carpets
Carpets are constantly being walked on when they are not being wiped on when they are placed in the hallway. That’s why we take advantage of this great cleaning to clean them thoroughly. For the small carpets, for example, those located in front of a door, we shake them to remove the dust, preferably outside.
If you have larger carpets, you can rent a carpet shampooer that can also be used to clean fabric chairs and sofas. Stubborn stains can also be tackled using a stain remover or baking soda to absorb grease. Simply sprinkle a little on the stains and leave for a few hours before sweeping.
2. Bedding, cushions, and armchairs
In the bedroom, take the opportunity to clean the bedding. Turn the mattress over before vacuuming and wash the quilt, pillows, and covers. We also vacuum sofas and armchairs made of fabric as well as the underside of cushions. If cushions have covers, remove them for washing.
3. Windows and mirrors
While it is more difficult to wash outside windows when you are located high up, you can still wash them inside. A mixture of water and vinegar is a simple solution to make windows and mirrors shine. Good to know: avoid washing windows in direct sunlight and use newspaper to wipe; it leaves less residue than paper towels and does not leave any marks. For the fussier, a hair dryer can be useful to get rid of the water.
For the blinds, it all depends on their condition. You can either dust them, give them a quick sweep, or if they are really dirty, use a small damp cloth or spray a mixture of water and vinegar on the slats and wipe them immediately. Curtains can be dusted with a vacuum cleaner and smoothed with a steam iron.
4. Wardrobes
They accumulate our clothes and various accessories throughout the year. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to sort through them. It is also the occasion to rotate winter clothes for the summer season.
5. The kitchen
The kitchen is a room that requires a little more effort. This is the time to eliminate grease stains that have accumulated on cabinet doors and the outside drawers. Also, don’t forget to give the cabinets a little feather dusting.
The refrigerator and freezer are not to be neglected. Get rid of expired products and clean the drawers and shelves with an equal mixture of hot water and vinegar. We also clean the outside of the refrigerator, not to mention the top, back, and coils.
Spring cleaning also means cleaning the oven and the hood. Check if the filter of the latter needs to be replaced. The same treatment is given to the microwave, and the garbage cans are cleaned and disinfected. We also take the opportunity to clean the dishwasher, both inside and out, by running it through a vacuum cycle with a product designed for this purpose. A mixture of lemon juice in hot water will work wonders for stubborn grease stains.
