Why Use Vinegar?
Vinegar is one of the star products in the kitchen. However, its use is not only limited to seasoning salads and meals, since vinegar is an excellent cleaning product. The best part? It is not a chemical or abrasive product.
We detail, point by point, all the properties and uses of vinegar in your home. You’ll be surprised at what you can (and should) clean with vinegar!
Types of Vinegar
But first, let’s find out the most common types of vinegar and which ones are the most effective for cleaning.
– 1. Apple Cider Vinegar- Made from the fermentation process of cider, it is also used as a cleaning product. It is most effective when mixed with products such as baking soda or lemon juice.
– 2. Red Wine Vinegar- It is obtained from the fermentation of wine. It is not suitable for cleaning.
– 3. Rice Vinegar- It is widely used in oriental cuisines. It has a milder flavor. We do not recommend it for cleaning.
– 4. White Vinegar- It is the most common in the cupboards of thousands of kitchens. And it’s the best for cleaning! Because it is more acidic than the others. In fact, its use is more frequent in housework.
White vinegar for cleaning is not the same as white wine vinegar. They should not be confused. The first one has an acidity of 8% while the second one has only an acid concentration that varies between 3% and 5%. The one we recommend for cleaning is white vinegar (alcoholic). In supermarkets it is called “cleaning vinegar”.
Now that we have seen the most common types of vinegar, let’s find out what uses it can be given to clean your home.
Antibacterial Agent
White vinegar is a powerful natural disinfectant. You can use it on all surfaces in your home: floors, tiles, glass, and even to remove pesticides from fruits and vegetables.
White vinegar is able to eliminate bacteria, fungi, mold and other types of organisms that can cause dirt and bad odors. For example, it is very useful for disinfecting and cleaning food cutting boards, especially if they are made of wood.
In fact, we recently discovered the ultimate trick for cleaning and eliminating bad odors from mops. Guess who the responsible agent is? Yes, white vinegar!
This is our favorite all-purpose home cleaner. We put it to the test and it is 100% effective at removing grease from surfaces and mildew from screen seals.
Removes Bad Odors from Clothes
Vinegar also neutralizes bad odor from clothes, yellow stains caused by sweat, bad odor from the refrigerator or food containers that you want to reuse, such as glass jars. In the case of clothes, in addition to eliminating bad odors, it is an excellent natural softener.
Simply add 1/4 cup of vinegar to the softener can. Don’t worry about the smell! It will disappear as soon as the clothes dry.
In addition to removing bad odors from clothes, it’s also great for cleaning the darkest stains on socks. To do this, pour equal parts water and vinegar into a basin, put the pieces in and let them soak for two hours. Your socks will look as clean as the day they were made!
Removing Tough Stains from Fabrics
White vinegar cleaning is also widely used to remove difficult stains from fabrics, especially when it comes to delicate clothing, such as blood stains, yellow stains on white clothes, whitish marks left by deodorants under the armpits of clothes, among others. We list the most common ones:
- It is ideal for cleaning satin or satin-effect clothing because it does not damage the fabric fibers as stronger detergents might.
- It is perfect for removing grease stains (kitchen and machine) from clothes.
- It is perfect for removing yellow stains that accumulate from sweat on pillows and their stuffing.
- It is perfect for removing yellow stains from sheets and mattresses.
- It is perfect for removing dried wine stains from clothes, carpets and tablecloths.
