With the advent of the internet, we come across several articles daily that assure us that their secret about cleaning will be life-changers. Well, my friends, I am here to tell you that most of them tend to be fake. The clickbaity title is only here to attract you to click and read them. Laurence Peter once said that ‘originality is the fine art of remembering what you hear but forgetting where you heard it from. Most people on the internet do; they read something online and accept it as a fact without fact-checking it and running with it as if it was the truth. I am not the first to say this, because originality is dead and all, but you should never believe everything you read on the internet.
#Myth 1- Vinegar can be an all-purpose cleaner
Okay, let’s start this list; with vinegar, people rave that it cleans everything. Yes, it can clean many things but is not a universal cleaning agent. It is good to clean grease and is a great limestone remover, so it’s excellent for cleaning windows, coffee makers, greasy pots and pans but is not suitable for every material. You shouldn’t use vinegar to clean your granite countertop or your wood furniture. The acidic nature of vinegar is an excellent addition to some dishes and salads but can damage wood and make them look uglier and worn out.
#Myth 2- Bleach can clean everything
Sure, bleach, just like vinegar, is useful and can disinfect many things, but they aren’t a universal cleaning agent. Sure, it gets rid of stains and makes white things look whiter, but it shouldn’t be used on every surface. Most people associate the smell of bleach with cleaning and believe it is one of the best cleaning agents out there, but this idea that it cleans everything is unfounded. A fun fact that most people aren’t aware of is that bleach barely even cleans things. Sure it disinfects, whiten stain and kills germs but this doesn’t equate to cleaning. It will eliminate the germ that raw chicken leaves on your counter but won’t get rid of grit in the shower.
#Myth 3- Feather dusters are the best dust removers.
Although this one is seen in the hands of every maid on television and movies and it even comes as part of some maid costume, feather dusters don’t do much to collect dust. They do the exact opposite and just move the dust around, and ultimately they make your house look dirtier instead of cleaner. Sure it looks great with a maid customer, but I wouldn’t use it for cleaning; a better option for collecting dust would be a microfiber cloth or even your good old vacuum cleaner. A wet towel will work wonders too and is a better and cheaper alternative to a feather duster.
#Myth 4- Polish your wood weekly
I mean, this sounds like a fantastic idea right, you are keeping them clean, so how could this be a myth. Well, polishing it too much will damage it and make it lose its shine over time. Most wood furniture on the market today doesn’t even need polishing; just cleaning them with a wet tower once every month or so will do the job and get rid of all the dust. Applying too much wax or polish on your wood furniture will make it appear dull over time as the polish will build up.
#Myth 5- Lemon peel removes the smell in your garbage disposal.
Garbage disposal is one’s of the greatest inventions out there if you ask me; not only does it make your cleaning and washing up easier, it also gets rid of all the detritus that might amass in your sink. They are also environmentally friendly as they reduce food waste significantly and also prevent your plumbing and pipes from clogging. However, throwing lemon peels down it every once in a while does nothing for the bad smell. They don’t clean it but instead clog it. You should rather use the lemon peel in one of your baked goods. To clean it, mix a cup of white vinegar and half a cup of baking soda, pour it down the drain and follow this by running hot water down it and this will do the trick.
